Requirements of the Juneteenth Oratorical Contest

Eligibility

1. The contest is open to contestants under the age of 19 as of January 1st of the current Juneteenth year and who have not yet completed secondary school or its equivalent.

2. A contestant is eligible to enter/compete in the Juneteenth Oratorical contest during a contest year.

3. The application must be submitted prior to the competition. A printed copy of the speech must be furnished before the contest in order to be eligible to compete.

Speech will be judged on the following:

  • Content
  • Speech should be original, fresh, direct, applying the students knowledge.
  • Use skillfull select examples, descriptions, analogies.
  • The speech should be logical, well organized and developed.
  • Show a comprehensive knowledge of the subject matter.
  • Total word for speech should not exceed 1000, with a minimum of 500.

The theme of the of the contest is based on Mya Angelo’s Poem “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings.”

The poem describes the opposing experiences between two birds: one bird is able to live in nature as it pleases, while a different caged bird suffers in captivity. The latter bird sings both to cope with its circumstances and to express its own longing for freedom.

Monetary Awards will be provided to 1st – 2nd – 3rd place winners

The contest will take place Saturday March 25, 2023 6pm, at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art - 2818 Frederick Ave. A lite meal will be served at the event, a donation of $20.00 attendees is requested.
